Removing the fuel tank from a BMW E36 (1990–2000 3 Series) is a moderately advanced task that requires safety precautions and mechanical knowledge. The fuel tank is mounted under the rear seats and extends beneath the car between the rear axle and the driveshaft. Here’s a general step-by-step guide:

Before You Start

Work in a well-ventilated area.

Disconnect the battery (negative terminal).

Relieve fuel pressure (open the fuel filler cap and/or use a pressure relief valve at the fuel rail).

Ensure the car is safely lifted using jack stands on level ground.

Work with an almost empty tank to avoid dealing with a lot of fuel weight and spillage.

Tools & Materials Needed

Floor jack & jack stands

10mm, 13mm, 17mm sockets

Flathead screwdriver or fuel line disconnect tool

Pliers

Fuel-safe container (if draining fuel)

Replacement tank straps or hardware (optional)

Step-by-Step Fuel Tank Removal (BMW E36)
1. Remove the Rear Seat Bottom

Lift the rear seat bottom (just pull up) to access the fuel pump covers.

2. Access Fuel Pump and Sending Units

Remove the round access panels under the rear seat.

Disconnect the fuel pump wiring and fuel lines.

Mark or take pictures of hose locations for reassembly.

3. Drain the Fuel Tank (Optional but Recommended)

Use a siphon pump or disconnect a return line and collect fuel in a safe container.

4. Raise the Car

Securely lift the rear of the car with jack stands.

5. Remove Exhaust System

Unbolt from the catalytic converter/midpipe section and remove hangers.

Fully remove the rear section of the exhaust.

6. Remove Heat Shields

There are metal heat shields covering the tank. Remove them to access the straps and filler neck.

7. Disconnect Driveshaft (if necessary)

You may need to remove the driveshaft center support bearing and drop it slightly to clear the tank.

8. Disconnect Filler Neck

Unscrew the filler neck clamp and separate it from the tank.

Disconnect any attached vent hoses.

9. Disconnect Fuel Lines Under the Car

Disconnect supply, return, and vent lines carefully.

Plug them to avoid leaks or dirt ingress.

10. Remove Tank Straps

Support the tank with a floor jack.

Unbolt the two fuel tank straps (13mm or 17mm bolts depending on model).

11. Lower the Tank Carefully

Slowly lower the tank while checking for any remaining connections.

Tilt and maneuver the tank out from under the car.

Final Tips

Inspect the fuel tank for damage or rust if you're reinstalling it.

Replace any brittle rubber hoses, gaskets, or clamps.

Clean all connections and use dielectric grease on electrical plugs.
